OLA CATHEDRAL GROTTO UNDERGOING FACELIFT

The Our Lady of Annunciation (OLA) Cathedral in Tamale, is embarking on a project to modernise and give a facelift to its Marian grotto to befit the status of the premier Catholic Church in Tamale, which also serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Tamale.
The project, initiated by the Cathedral Administrator, Very Rev. Fr. Thaddeus Kuusah, is to enhance the spiritual life of parishioners and visitors alike, by providing sacred spaces for prayer and, meditation, and devotion.
Construction work commenced in April, 2026, and is scheduled to be completed by 25th October, 2026, at an estimated cost of GH¢450,000.00.
The project is funded through contributions by parishioners, parish societies, donations from benefactors and well-wishers, and fundraising activities organised by the Cathedral.
The scope of work to be done is in three parts, namely, the facelift of the grotto, erection of fourteen Stations of the Cross, and construction of a sanctuary with an overhead pavilion.
Work on the grotto involves the design of a shrine dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM), erection of the statue of the BVM, paved prayer area for individual and groups, landscaping with flowers, trees, and ornamental plants.
The rest involve lighting systems for evening prayers and devotions, and modernised seats for pilgrims and worshippers.
Work on the Stations of the Cross consist of the construction and installation of the fourteen Stations of the Cross, durable artistic depictions of each Station, pathways connecting all Stations, landscaping, and resting points along the routes.
The sanctuary on the other hand, will be built in concrete, with an overhead pavilion.
When completed, the grotto will provide a permanent centre for Marian devotion, enhance participation in the Stations of the Cross especially during Lent.
It would also foster deeper spiritual reflection among parishioners, beautify the Cathedral premises, attract pilgrims, and promote the culture of prayer and contemplation.
On 4th August, 2026, the OLA Editorial Committee visited the site to inspect progress of work, and brings you these pictures from the ongoing project.
