CATHOLIC MEN SOCIETY
THE HISTORY OF THE ORIGINS OF CMS
Reverend Richard Baptist O'Brien (later Dean O'Brien) was the specific individual who founded the Catholic Young Men's Society (CYMS) which later spread internationally and is considered a precursor to modern Catholic Men Associations/Societies in vatious parts of the world.
Dean Richard Baptist O'Brien (1808-1885) was the key figure in the formation of Catholic Men's Association, founding the Catholic Young Men's Society (CYMS) in Ireland in May 1848.
This organization was highly successful and expanded rapidly to other parts of the world, including Britain, Australia and South Africa.
His role in the formation of the association can be summarized as follows:
. Founder: Dean O'Brien established the Catholic Young Men's Society in Limerick, Ireland, to provide educational, recreational, and spiritual opportunities for young Catholic men.
. Vision and Inspiration: He was inspired by the model of the Protestant Young Men's Christian Association (YCMA) and sought to create a parallel organization for Catholics focusing on 'Ultramontane catholicism's conflict with protestantism and modern agnosticism. He established the society to provide lectures, reading rooms, and libraries, mirroring the Protestant Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) model but within a distinctly Catholic framework to address the spiritual and social needs of young Catholic men.
. Expansion: The Society's success led to its rapid spread throughout Ireland and internationally, becoming the oldest lay Catholic organization in the country and establishing branches in various regions across the British Empire.
. Guidance and Dedication: O'Brien dedicated the Society to Immaculate Heart of Mary and encouraged members to cultivate a strong Marian devotion, including praying the Holy Rosary and visiting shrines.
Leadership: He served as the president of the Catholic Young Men's Society (CYMS), stepping down in 1866 to pursue more active political movement. The Catholic Young Men's Society continues to operate today, guided by the principles established by Dean O'Brien.
The history of the Catholic Men's Association (CMA) is complex and diverse with some groups forming in the last 25 years in Africa, like the one in Cameroon, while others trace their origins further back.
Globally, the International Council of Catholic Men (ICCM), also known as Unum Omnes, was established in 1948, and in the UK, the Catholic Association was founded in 1891 to support Catholic interests and provide fellowship. In the United States, there were early attempts at creating Catholic men's groups, such as the Young Men's Catholic Association proposed by Reverend Bernard J.McQuaid in 1854.
International Organizations:
. International Council of Catholic Men: Also known as Unum Omnes, this international body was founded in 1948 to provide support and platform for national Catholic men's associations.
. Catholic Associations (UK): Established in 1891 with Cardinal Manning's blessing, the Catholic Association aimed to foster unity and fellowship through social events and to advance Catholic interests.
Local and Regional history:
. Cameroon: The Catholic Men Association (CMA) began in Cameroon about 25 years ago as the Catholic Men Organization (CMO) before changing its name.
. United States: Reverend Bernard J. McQuaid proposed an outline for a Young Men's Catholic Association in 1854, an early effort to create a Catholic alternative to YCMA, though it did not last.
. In Ghana: The beginning of formal Catholic Men's Association (CMA) is marked by local chapters. A group known as Catholic Men Society (CMS) was formed, in the Tamale Archdiocese, on 1 July 2018 at Saints Peter & Paul Parish, under the guidance of the Archbishop; Most Rev Philip Naameh. It has since spread to other Parishes, including Our Lady of Annunciation Cathedral (OLA), Holy Trinity, and Holy Cross Parishes.
